he left his wife and little ones 
the call had been so strong 
the war would only be short they had said 
and he was sure that he would not be long 

oh he was right that soldier 
that soldier so young and brave 
for him the war was very short 
too soon he lay in his grave 

his wife and little ones were left alone 
no daddy to sing them a song 
all because the war was short 
and he knew that he would not be long
